This week on the podcast we have Erin Pollitt, RN, BSN, MHA. Erin started her nursing career in the emergency room (ER). Like many other forensic nurses, this is where she was first introduced into the forensic nursing world.
She started out as a sexual assault nurse examiner and then worked her way up! She is now the Executive Director for the DC Forensic Nurse Examiners (DCFNE). DCFNE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing patient-centered forensic nursing care to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in Washington, DC.

She started out as a sexual assault nurse examiner. She now has her own forensic nursing education and consulting company that provides more focused training in specific areas of forensic nursing that introductory courses may not have covered.

About the show
This week on the podcast we have Sara Jennings, RN, BSN, MSN, PhD. Sara started her nursing career as a diploma prepared nurse and worked her way through schooling eventually to obtain her PhD in Forensic Nursing. She first became interested in forensic nursing while she was working as an Emergency Room nurse. Like many ER nurses, she was afraid to take sexual assault patients because she didn’t feel she knew what she was doing. So, she took that as a challenge! She inquired about getting more education in working with sexual assault patients (and other patients who experienced violence) and looked for opportunities to work more with this patient population.
Sara takes us through her nursing journey and shares with us how she came to work for IAFN (International Association of Forensic Nursing – the professional organization for forensic nurses). She tells us what her current job entails and gives information on other positions possible for nurses within this specialty.

This week on the podcast we have Em Jamieson, RN, BSN. Em started her nursing career at Duke University in North Carolina. She fell in love with the oncology specialty during her Capstone project in nursing school. She started her career in oncology and then started travel nursing. She eventually landed in Houston and has been working in one of MD Anderson’s outpatient oncology clinics.
Em takes us through her nursing journey and highlights her passion for oncology. She educates us on how the oncology specialty is organized. She shares with us what her current job entails and gives information on other positions possible for nurses within this specialty. She eventually moved back to California and is currently working as a Resource Triage Coordinator for one of the Organ Procurement Organizations (OPO) in California.

He then moved back to New York and took a job in an HIV/AIDS outpatient clinic. This week on the podcast, we have Fatima Gatela, RN, BSN, MBA. Fatima started her nursing career in the Philippines then came over to the US to continue her career. She first worked in Floride and then made her way to California where she began her foray into nurse informatics.
Fatima takes us through her nursing journey and tell us how she got into nursing informatics and why she chose that specialty. She gives us a good overview of the available jobs within the nursing informatics specialty and some tips for getting started. She also shared her migration into nurse entrepreneurship, tells us how she started her own website, and how that grew into helping other nurses interested in the nurse informatics field.

The week on the podcast is Ryan Johnson, RN, BSN. Ryan started his nursing career by obtaining his BSN from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA (an accelerated 2nd degree program). He and his family then moved back to San Diego where he worked in the ER and then transitioned into education.
